The Science of Why Nature Heals Your Family
Around the world, from Japan's forest baths to Canada's park prescriptions, doctors now write nature into their treatment plans.

What Time Outdoors Actually Does For Families
Outdoor adventure feels good. That much barely needs a citation. What's more interesting, and more useful, is looking honestly at what the research actually shows, where it's solid, and where it's still early days. Because the case for getting families outside is genuinely worth making. It just doesn't need exaggeration to hold up.
Stress: the best-supported claim in this whole piece
If there's one finding here that rests on solid ground, it's this one. A 2019 University of Michigan study, led by Dr MaryCarol Hunter and published in Frontiers in Psychology, tracked 36 adults over eight weeks and found that a nature break of 20 to 30 minutes produced the steepest drop in salivary cortisol, the body's main stress-hormone marker. A separate 2025 trial from the Medical University of Vienna found something similar: adults who spent 20 minutes in a wooded area showed a measurable cortisol drop that a matched group in an urban setting didn't.
Two honest caveats. First, both studies used ordinary parks and woodland, not backcountry wilderness, so the "20-minute dose" doesn't tell us much about what a week-long expedition does to the body. Second, the Michigan study was small and not demographically diverse, so treat the exact numbers as suggestive rather than definitive. What we can say with confidence is that short, regular time outdoors reliably calms the nervous system, at least in the way this particular biomarker measures calm.
As for family conflict and satisfaction during shared outdoor time, that's something many families report anecdotally, ourselves included, but it isn't something the peer-reviewed research has rigorously measured. We'd rather say that plainly than dress up a hunch as a finding.
Immune function: promising, but built on a narrow evidence base
The idea that forest air does something to the immune system isn't invented. It traces to a specific line of Japanese research, mostly from Dr Qing Li's group, showing that phytoncides (aromatic compounds released by trees) can increase natural killer cell activity in the blood after time in a forest. A 2024 systematic review confirmed the pattern shows up fairly consistently across these studies.
The catch is that this body of work comes overwhelmingly from one research group, with small sample sizes, and hasn't yet been replicated at scale by independent labs elsewhere. That doesn't make it wrong. It makes it early. We think it's a genuinely exciting research thread, not a settled fact yet.
The soil-and-gut-health story is similarly real but easy to oversimplify. There's a credible and active field of research (the "biodiversity hypothesis," an update to the older hygiene hypothesis) showing that children raised around microbially rich environments, like farms, tend to have lower rates of allergic and autoimmune conditions. But researchers in this field are explicit that this isn't really about household cleanliness, and it isn't licence to avoid basic hygiene. It's about long-term, early-life exposure to environmental microbial diversity, which is a narrower and more specific claim than "the outdoors is medicine."
Cognitive benefits: a real theory with genuinely mixed results
Attention Restoration Theory, developed by Rachel and Stephen Kaplan, proposes that natural settings let our effortful, directed attention recover in a way that busy or urban environments don't. It's one of the most cited frameworks in environmental psychology, and it deserves to be taken seriously.
It also deserves an honest caveat: a systematic review of the cognitive evidence found that studies with the strongest research design, ones that measured attention both before and after nature exposure, generally didn't find a clear improvement, while the weaker studies (measuring only after exposure) did. That's a meaningful split, and it means the theory is plausible and popular, but not yet conclusively proven at the level the strongest studies would require.
The specific claim about children with ADHD focusing better in green spaces rests substantially on one 2011 study with a small sample and an unrandomised design (every child visited the wooded area first, so we can't fully rule out order effects). It's a promising early result, not a settled finding.
Our own experience, and plenty of parents will recognise this, is that kids seem to concentrate and self-regulate more easily after time outside. We just don't want to claim the science has nailed down why, or exactly how much, yet.
Physical health: true in general, but not adventure-specific
Movement outdoors, hiking, swimming, scrambling over uneven ground, is genuinely good exercise, and functional, varied movement is well established in the general exercise science literature as beneficial for cardiovascular health, sleep and daily energy. What we can't point to is dedicated research comparing outdoor adventure activity specifically against equivalent effort in a gym. The physiological benefits of movement are real; the idea that adventure-based movement is categorically superior to structured exercise is our own view and enthusiasm talking, not a documented finding.
Connection and meaning: honestly, this is our conviction, not a citation
Families who travel and explore together often describe those trips as formative, the ones that get talked about for years. We believe that, and we've built a company around it. But we should be straightforward that this is lived experience and a strongly held view, not a body of peer-reviewed research. The sense of scale and perspective that wild places can produce is well documented in writing about awe and nature (Dacher Keltner's work on awe is a good starting point for anyone curious), but the specific claim that adventure trips are the bedrock of family closeness is ours to make as an opinion, not something we can hand you a study for.
Why this still matters for conservation, argued honestly
Here's where we want to be most careful, because this is the crux of the piece, and it's an argument, not a proven mechanism.
The wellbeing benefits above, real, partial, and still-developing as they are, all depend on wild places continuing to exist. That's true almost by definition: you can't get the (well-supported) 20-minute cortisol benefit from a woodland that's been cleared, and you can't study phytoncide effects in a forest that no longer stands.
What we can't claim is that pointing this out to people reliably makes them care more about conservation. Research on environmental messaging suggests the picture is more complicated than "self-interest framing works" or "it doesn't": studies looking at self-interest versus values-based appeals generally find the effect depends on who's listening. People who already hold strong environmental values tend to respond better to values-based messaging, while people who don't tend to respond better to messaging about personal benefit. Neither approach is a reliably superior lever on its own. So we'll say this plainly: we find the health case for wild places compelling, and we think it's a legitimate reason to care about them, but we're offering it as our reasoning, not as a scientifically demonstrated way to change anyone's mind.
Where that leaves us
The honest version of this piece is a little less punchy than "outdoor adventure is the single most powerful health intervention available to modern families." But we'd rather be the kind of company that undersells the evidence and still makes you want to go outside, than one that oversells it and loses your trust the first time someone checks.
The short version holds up fine: time outdoors calms people down, probably supports the immune system in ways we're still learning about, plausibly helps attention and focus, and gets bodies moving in ways that feel good. Wild places make all of that possible. That's worth protecting, and worth building a life around.
